LiDAR Processing Services (DTM/ DSM)

LiDAR Processing

Light Detection and Ranging systems (LiDAR) generate accurate height data and intensity images that help to model the earth's surface in detail. They do so over large, often remote, sometimes inaccessible geographical areas, making it a cost effective application for capturing accurate data. Typically we aren’t responsible for capturing the LiDAR data itself, but we do help to process it for a large and ever-increasing number of clients. For the most part the processing service centres on the extraction of accurate height models in the form of Digital Terrain Models (DTM) and Digital Surface Models (DSM).

Our LiDAR services are also useful in Cut and Fill calculations for engineering projects such as dams, tunnels, road modelling systems and forestry applications. For the latter, unlike RADAR, LiDAR is a more precise method for measuring topography, vegetation height and cover, and complex canopy attributes. This is due to its vegetation penetration properties.

For most projects we begin by classifying the raw data into ground, low, air, vegetation, building, wire, electric tower and water class by using automatic macros. Then the data is passed through a rigorous and detailed quality check at the hands of our experienced staff.

Feature Extraction

In GIS, Feature Extraction is the process by which features relating to a particular object or space are extracted from the images and data that have been captured by remote sensing or GIS technologies. It is a process used successfully by a number of sectors ranging from industrial to non-industrial, defence to local security, and public to private. It is, for instance, the key process used to: plan and design towns and cities; establish a framework for industrial projects; study land features; plan and execute military operations; manage disaster consequences. Feature extraction services can be classified as 2D feature extraction or 3D feature extraction according to the requirements and objectives of the project.
