Challenge

The client needed to process dense, unstructured point cloud data while maintaining precise separation between terrain, vegetation, pylons, bridges, and utility cables. Vegetation encroachment near high-voltage infrastructure posed a major operational risk, while inconsistencies in point classification could compromise downstream engineering and maintenance workflows. The scale and density of the dataset also required robust QA and computational oversight to prevent feature loss and classification noise.

Approach

SBL Infotech deployed a dedicated LiDAR operations team trained in European utility classification standards and infrastructure taxonomy. Using advanced segmentation workflows, the team separated raw point cloud data into six structured feature classes covering terrain, vegetation, utility infrastructure, and urban structures. Multi-stage validation ensured accurate pylon and cable extraction, vegetation proximity analysis, and engineering-grade LAS/LAZ deliverables suitable for utility maintenance systems and spatial risk analysis.

Outcome

The client received a clean, queryable 3D spatial database capable of supporting large-scale utility monitoring and preventative maintenance initiatives.
